One tomato plant won’t change the world. But fifty gardens, each with a tomato plant, can feed hundreds.
Small plots, big impact.

Why This Matters
Food insecurity isn’t something far away—it’s here, in our own towns. Most of us don’t see it, but neighbors are making choices every week between fresh food and something cheaper, just to stretch their budgets.
This fall, we’re running a pilot. A test. No cost, no commitment. I’ll provide the seeds, you provide the space—whether it’s a few pots on a patio, a corner of a raised bed, or a patch of soil you’ve ignored for years. Together, we’ll see what happens when all those small plots add up.
If 50 people each grow a basket of radishes or a handful of greens, suddenly we’ve created something real. Small plots, big impact.
And this isn’t just theory—two local food pantries are already on board, ready to accept and distribute the harvest.
Whether you’re already a gardener, someone who wants to learn, or just have a few square feet of unused yard, you can take part.
From Your Yard to a Pantry Shelf
Sign Up - Raise your hand and say yes. No contracts, no fine print — just a simple commitment to see what a little garden space can do.
Get Seeds – I’ll provide them. No cost, no catch — just the starting point for a garden that could end up feeding more than you think.
Plant & Grow – Whether it’s your first time or your hundredth, you’ll watch food take root. I’ll share guidance if you need it.
Harvest – The cycle completes. What sprouted becomes something edible, something real.
Donate & Deliver – Bring what you grew to the food pantry you select. They’ll put it in the hands of families who need it.

FAQ — or, the Questions You’re Probably Already Thinking

There isn’t one. You raise your hand, you say yes, and you’re in. No contracts, no guilt trips, no hidden fees. Just you, a patch of soil, and the idea that a basket of radishes from your yard can mean something more.
-
Nope. If you’ve never planted anything in your life, you still belong here. If you already have beds of kale and spinach thriving, you belong here too. This pilot is for anyone willing to try — whether it’s a 2x2 corner of dirt, or a raised bed you’ve ignored all summer.
-
Then we’ll make one. A pot, a strip of lawn, a forgotten corner by the fence — space is space. Small plots, big impact.
Get Seeds (Free For Fall Pilot
-
From me. For this fall pilot, I’m giving them out free, no strings attached. Think of it as a starter kit for turning good intentions into greens.
-
Of course. The point isn’t where the seeds came from, it’s what you grow out of them.
-
Because this is a test. I want to see if people will say yes when there’s almost nothing standing in their way.
Plant & Grow
-
Cool-weather crops that don’t need a long season: radishes, leafy greens, carrots, maybe some herbs. Vegetables that will grow steady, feed people well, and make it from seed to table before winter sets in.
-
Yes. Think of me as your “text-away gardener.” Got flea beetles eating your arugula? Carrots refusing to sprout? Send me a picture, I’ll give you a nudge. You’re not on your own.
-
Then you screw it up. That’s gardening. Sometimes seeds don’t take, sometimes weather shifts on you. Even if only half your greens make it, that’s still food in someone’s hands.
Harvest
-
When the crops are ready. Radishes tell you quick — pull one and see. Greens can be cut as you go, a little at a time. Carrots need patience, but when they push their shoulders up out of the soil, you’ll know.
-
Yes. Please do. This isn’t about giving away everything. It’s about sharing part of what you grow.
-
Then nothing grows. You still tried, you still learned. That matters more than you think.
Donate & Deliver
-
For the pilot, we’re working with two local pantries: one in Metuchen, one in Edison. You’ll pick one when you sign up. They’re on board and ready to accept the produce.
-
You drop it off on their distribution days. Straight from your garden to their tables — no storage, no middleman.
-
Not for now. Keeping it to two pantries makes the pilot simple and clean. If this works, we’ll expand.
What Do I Get Out Of This?
-
Because it feels good to do something small that matters. Because you’ll pull a radish from your soil and know the next one you harvest will end up on someone else’s plate.
-
No. It’s community. It’s neighbors helping neighbors. It’s you deciding that a patch of dirt in your yard can do more than just sit there.
-
Not really. But once you see those greens sprout, you might find yourself hooked.
What Does NJBackyard Get Out Of This
-
No. There’s no profit here. This is me testing a hunch: that a hundred tiny gardens stitched together can actually matter.
-
I love gardening. I love this town. And I love the idea of people doing something together without waiting for an organization or nonprofit to lead the way. That’s it.
-
If it works, maybe next season we do it bigger. More gardeners, more food, more impact. But right now? It’s just one season. One pilot. Let’s see if it breathes.
The Food Pantries
-
Yes. Both pantries have said yes. They’ve told me how they can accept fresh produce, and we’re working within their distribution schedules.
-
Because starting small keeps it real. We’ll open it up more if this grows, but for now, it’s focused.
-
They’re excited. Fresh greens and root crops are tough to get consistently — and they know their clients want them. Ask them yourself to learn more!
Together, Let’s Test This Idea
This is a pilot — part gardening, part community, part experiment.
Maybe you’ll plant a few radishes this fall.
Maybe you’ll just watch and see what happens.
Either way, you’re in.
No cost. No pressure. Just a chance to follow along, get updates, and (if you choose) put a small patch of soil to work for something bigger than yourself.
